New Library Resource: MedCalc3000

MedCalc 3000 is a computerized medical reference and tool set encompassing a wide array of pertinent medical formulae, clinical criteria sets and decision tree analysis tools used everyday by clinicians, medical educators, nurses and health care students.

To practice, teach and learn medicine based on solid, literature based data, practitioners are easily overwhelmed by the breadth of information that they must master. MedCalc 3000 helps simplify this task by assembling easy to use, interactive tools used to learn Evidence Based Medicine.
 

2016 Citation Laureates in Chemistry

Thomson Reuters has released its list of 2016 “Citation Laureates” on 21 September.

Professor Lo Yuk Ming Dennis of the Department of Chemical Pathology is selected as one of this year’s Citation Laureates in Chemistry for his innovative research in “detecting cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma, a revolution in noninvasive prenatal testing.” Congratulation!

The Power of Words

Do you notice the glass wall poems inside the Library? Did you slow down to read them? How did they make you feel?
  

The Power of Words now shares handwriting poems on the glass wall of the leisure reading room inside the Medical Library. The poems create a literately enriched environment for relaxing and enjoyment of art and literature.

The Power of Words is jointly organised by The Independent Learning Centre, Hong Kong Literature Research Centre, Office of the Arts Administrator and Tolopoem.

DVD-ROM on Loan

Now a DVD-ROM is available for in-house use at the Medical Library. It is compatible with the notebook PC inside the Group Discussion Room. Please borrow it at the Circulation Counter.

BMJ Open Ophthalmology

A new open access journal BMJ Open Ophthalmology will launch in September 2016. The journal aims to publish high-quality articles on basic, translational and clinical science covering all aspects of ophthalmology and vision science. 

BMJ Open Ophthalmology will foster a close interaction between basic, translational and clinical sciences by addressing the needs of both clinicians and scientists through high-quality, peer-reviewed content across the breadth of ophthalmology and vision science. 

The journal is offering an introductory full waiver of the Article Publishing Charge (APC) for articles submitted between 1st June and 31st August 2016. Find out more here.

Merck Manuals

Being one of the world’s most widely used medical information resources, the Merck Manuals are now available for free in digital form to professionals and patients. First published in 1899 as a small reference book for physicians and pharmacists,  the Manual grew in size and scope to become one of the most widely used comprehensive medical resources for professionals and consumers. 

As the Manual evolved, it continually expanded the reach and depth of its offerings to reflect the mission of providing the best medical information of the day to a wide cross-section of users, including medical professionals, students and consumers.

The Manuals are available in two versions: Professional Version & ConsumerVersion.

The Microbiome and Man Article Collection

BMC Medicine has launched a new article collection on "The Microbiome and Man" 

This article collection explores the most recent and exciting findings on how the microbiome shapes our body responses and affects treatment. The collection includes invited reviews and commentaries featuring topics such as the gut brain axis, the role of microbiome in treatment outcomes, immune response and microbiome diversity and the effect of antibiotics in children.  

The article collection is now open for submissions of research articles reporting highly significant findings in all areas of microbiome research.
